We have entered a unique stage. Partial empty nest stage. When only one child remains at home and we look around, say to ourselves, "this is a lot more space than we need", and even though neither of use are "pack rats" there just seems to be too much "stuff".
With our needs changing, we talk about selling our home but the economy stinks, so
obviously, this is a buyers market and not a sellers, so we sit. I
love my home. It is the longest place I have ever lived (seven years).
We have very good memories here, and if it is God's will that we stay,
there will be many more to come.
I lied awake most of last night thinking about where and what to purge ... so this entire morning has been spent filling bags to consignment, donation and even trash. I go through a "nesting" time every so often, where I will just go from closet to closet, room to room, drawer to drawer and purge with out stopping until it is complete. My home seems a much more happy and quiet place when there is less to distract.

ReplyDeleteHi Trish, I can't remember where you live but I know that California is picking up with real estate and so is Colorado. I understand how you feel; I love our home but hubby never has and so we will probably move within the year-to a one story. I still want our home welcoming and cozy but not cluttered. Great job clearing out.

ReplyDeleteI hear you, I am working up to purging the basement as that seems to be our default place to keep anything that we don't know what to do with or don't have room for upstairs. We are fixing up the house to sell some day soon, but we will be looking for a slightly larger home, (for guestrooms for the kids and hopefully some day grandkids!) and a lot less yard to mow. Thinking about moving motivates me to be a little more ruthless in the purge.
ReplyDeleteI can relate to the work it takes to taking care of your property, and the overdoing it too. When my husband was here on this planet, we used to talk about having 1-5 acres in the country somewhere. Ha. While that would be nice, I have all I can handle here with our little 1/4 acre, with our cottage, workshop, and other outbuildings. I am purging a little here and there. I love our place and it is paid for. We moved in here in the summer of 1973. I'm close to the bank, Home Depot, grocery stores, the beach if I ever go is just 3 miles away, and other places are close too.

ReplyDeleteWow ! you have a very large lot and the house too ! I know exactly how you feel. I have had some anxiety of recent because we have lived in our house for 16 yrs. We do however rent this home. Never the less, it still feels like we made many memories here too..Our son grew up here, went to the local high school after I home schooled him all of his 8 yrs before high school. He was married and we have grand babies coming over for 5 yrs now.
ReplyDeleteWell last week the owner asked us for the house in Sept. or he will raise the rent.. I think we have accumulated so much stuff in 16 yrs that Im concerned we wont be going to a place big enough and hubby is a pack rat. Im not , he hangs on to every little screw, receipt piece of chalk etc LOL !!! I lay away wondering how to take everything and get rid of it without him having keniptions...I think we may have to bite the bullet and pay higher rent until next summer because I cant see moving in 2 months , it would take that long to empty out all 3 floors , a basement and a garage yikes....Are you moving ? If we do we will down size to a condo or 2 bedroom apt..
Oh how I feel your pain. I'm struggling to do my yard work in this heat & as you know it sends my allergies into overdrive! Please if you move, move my way! :) We can help each other with our yards & such! :)
ReplyDeleteI purge sometimes and it does feel good. The problem is the rooms don't get bigger. I would love more space, but that won't happen for quite some time ; )
ReplyDeleteI have to declutter each year or we get overrun by Stuff!! Our yard too is giving us more work than ever this year with all the heat and rain we have had, never seems to end.
ReplyDeleteOh Trish I am going through the same thing! It's harder for me to keep up with the property these days. As soon as my son leaves for college in the fall, I have big plans to get rid of extra clutter and keep it simple. Our home is too big for the two us us, but we aren't moving just yet. Having less "stuff" to take care of will surely make it easier. Good luck!

ReplyDeleteI totally understand this post. We have done the exact same thing recently. Sold our home and bought a much smaller one. Much smaller. I have only had a couple times when panic set in and I wondered....what have I done! But, it passes quickly and once again I am reminded of why we did this and the blessings it will bring. God is the best real estate agent. Even a poor market cannot keep Him from selling your home. :)

Our time is coming, too, but we won't be selling until we have to.We would be paying much more per month for a smaller house than we do for our two story home.
