This is such a fun and fast quilt to piece.

Seriously, beginning to end it was like two hours and finishes at 38" x 44"!  You can even change the color from blue to pink for a little girl.

fabric required.

a.  1 - 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" strip (center)

b.  2 - 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" strips and 2 - 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips

c.  2 - 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" and 2 - 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" strips

d.  2 - 2 1/2" x 16 1/2" and 2 - 2 1/2" x 14 1/2" strips

e.  2 - 2 1/2" x 20 1/2" and 2 - 2 1/2" x 18 1/2" strips

f.   2 - 2 1/2" x 24 1/2" and 2 - 2 1/2" x 22 1/2" strips

g.  2 - 2 1/2" x 28 1/2" and 2 - 2 1/2" x 26 1/2" strips

h.  2 - 2 1/2" x 32 1/2" and 2 - 2 1/2" x 30 1/2" strips

i.   2 - 2 1/2" x 36 1/2" and 2 - 2 1/2" x 34 1/2" strips

j.   2 - 2 1/2" x 40 1/2" and 2 - 2 1/2" x 38 1/2" strips

for binding you'll need 5 - 2 1/2" x wof and for backing 1 1/2 yards 

(this is a snug fit but if you baste carefully it will work)

sewing instructions.

you will be sewing rounds of strips to create this little quilt - to start sew an 8 1/2" strip to both sides of the center 

2 1/2" x 8 1/2" strip, press

sew a 6 1/2" strip to both top and bottom, press.

 Continue sewing rounds in the same manner, sides first then tops and bottoms. Quilt and bind! :o)

quick and easy scrappy cross block.

( through a series of unfortunate events, I lost all the original images taken for an entire quilt tutorial, using a visual step by step instruction - that being said these are the instructions for a single block )

There are any number of cross block designs, tutorials and color combinations available on line, so this isn't going to be a new pattern.  However, I had so much fun creating a quick and easy scrappy version, that I wanted to share the block measurements with you.  If you decide to make one of your own, I would love to see it!

for a 12 1/2" block you need :

 1 - 4 1/2" square ( center )

4 - 4 1/2" squares ( background color )

4 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" strips ( background color )

4 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" strips ( middle color )

sewing instructions : 

sew the 4 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" strips of back ground color to the 4 - 2 1/2" x  4 1/2" strips of middle color, press open to reduce bulk

layout 9 squares as seen in above picture and sew each row, press top and bottom rows to the right and middle row to the left, this ensures your seams will nest when sewing the rows into the block

sew top row to center and bottom to center, press towards the top row

*** when sewing an entire quilt of your size choice, alternate the pressing directions, so that each row will nest with the next ***

red white and blue rail fence quilt tutorial.

The rail fence quilt block is one of my favorite and has been around 

for many years.  At different widths and lengths, and color 

combinations, you can really have fun with this block.  

Especially when using lots of scraps from your stash, which is exactly what I did.  I pulled only reds and blues this time around.

for a 60" x 84" quilt you'll need : 

87 - 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" blue strips

88 - 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" red strips

4 yards fabric for backing

1/2 yard fabric for binding 

you will be making two 10 1/2" blocks

a mainly red block and a mainly blue block

 for the red block layout strips as follows

red, blue, red, blue, red

with right sides together sew strips, press seams open

make 18 

  for the blue block layout strips as follows

blue, red, blue, red, blue

with right sides together, sew strips

press seams open

make 17   

you will have a total of 35 blocks

 (chain piece to save time)

assemble the blocks into 7 rows of 5 blocks each 

rotating every other block

rows 1, 3, 5, and 7 will begin and end with a blue block

rows 2, 4 and 6 will begin and end with a red block

sew blocks together into rows and then sew rows together 

 to insure your seams between each block will nest with the next row you are sewing it to, press rows in opposite directions

 making do with what I had on hand I peiced the quilt backing with some special fabrics that I had been saving for just the right use

quilt and bind to finish your quilt

(I am learning how to free motion quilt, 

so please don't look too close at my stitches.)

easy square in square in square block tutorial. (lots of pictures)

On July 23, 2013 I shared my easy square in square tutorial. 

Fun and easy with no seams to match up! Not to mention the pattern is easily adapted to different size blocks.

 

Hence, the easy square in square in square block was born! (try and say that five times fast, ha ha ha!)

 

The original block measures 7 1/2", and is made with just 3 charm squares (5" squares).

The next round is sewn the very same way, only you will be cutting 2 matching 7 1/2" squares in half, diagonally, leaving you with 4 triangles.

The variety of scrappy goodness totally makes this quilt. A perfect way to dig through your stash and have some fun!

It was so much fun digging through my scrappy stash, cutting and sewing each block and then of course playing with them in a fun and colorful layout.

 

For the backing I chose a snuggly soft flannel, then sent it off to Kathy to work her quilting magic (be sure and check out her monthly quilting specials).  Thank you so much Kathy for such a lovely pattern you quilted!!!  {gigantic hugs}

I am absolutely in love with my easy square in square in square quilt!!!  I use it ALL the time!

 Of course, Sunday naps on the couch are the best!

for a generous sized throw my layout is 6 blocks x 7 blocks = 60" x 70"
