yes, i am in fact working on a Christmas quilt. you are too smart! these are the first star blocks that i have ever made. and i must say, i plan to make many more. the tutorial i am using is from v and co. she has the best step by step and pictures to boot. which is exactly how i learn.
one little thing that i am challenged with (i am not kidding you, i learn something new every time that i turn my sewing machine on - the journey of a new quilter), is that i cut all my solid blocks as 10" squares. the star blocks should be squared at 10 1/2". which means i am loosing a tiny tip off of each star. i have looked at my progress and wondering if i should just stop while i am ahead and start over, but i am limited by what fabric i have. so i plan to plug along and eat the fact i don't have uber pointy stars.
what would you have done?
update : i am just going to bite the bullet and start over. i really want this quilt to be lovely and not bug me every time i look at my pointless stars. i will just have to figure something else out for the solid blocks. those will now become part of my stars.
oh boy ... i need a little help. i keep loosing the tips to my stars, even if i only trim it down to 10 1/2". can you help me??
You need to leave 1/4 inch beyond the tips of your stars so that they don't get caught in your seam allowance! So your solid blocks should be the size of your star blocks (star measurement plus 1/4 inch on each side). Good luck!!

ReplyDeleteWell, the star block you are showing has perfect points with plenty of room for the seam....sorry I'm no help here...I don't do too many like this and I'm a pushover when it comes to perfection. Looks great - don't give up!!!
