Wanna Be Barn and Thankful Thoughts
Ok, so it isn't a barn ... it is actually the side of a shed. However, we are inching our way to embracing the country life style more and more. I would love to one day build a huge barn for my husband. It is just not in the budget right now.
So here we have it ... I am pretending it is the side of a barn and since I don't own a huge barn star (yet) I am gratefully decorating with the iron cross that I bought at my favorite thrift store, for $2.00. I spray painted it a yummy chocolate brown, yes, right over the rust ... I like that look for an outdoor piece. Some indoor for that matter.
Got some land ... check! Got a few chickens ... check! Got a dog (pronounce it dawg) ... check! Got a tractor ... well, not exactly ... does a riding lawn mower count? ... check! Last but not least, our barn ... well you can very well see ... not as of yet. Maybe one day!
It is funny. In the city, keeping up with the Joneses means where you live, the size of house you live in, the investments you have, and where you get your hair done! Not out here! It is the size of barn and size of truck! Not to mention a gun collection, which we are slowly building too. :o)
Side note ~ I have never been one to keep up with anyone, neither my husband or I. But I just have to say, this Northern California Girl is LOVING the country life!
I am so thankful for the sound of my neighbors hunting dogs running who knows what, through our yard at night, the sight of millions of stars on a clear night, burning stumps ... one at a time (we have almost 300 to burn), which means some fun bonfires where our children have their friends over to roast marshmallows! Genuinely caring and kind people who in a heartbeat would help you out if you needed it! It is a simple life, that we have. One where we don't hurry over a cup of coffee with a friend on her porch ... Donna! :o) One where everyone I know gardens ... in a big sort of way. I am sure our learning curve has made for some strange thoughts ... 4 buckets of tomato plants doesn't exactly constitute for a garden ... but we are learning, one year at a time!
I am so thankful for the path the Lord has chosen for our family to be upon.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great path the Lord has placed you and your family on. Sounds like how I grew up. Now I'm a southern city suburb girl.
I love where we are and where God has called us to join Him in His work. For the present, it seems that the Lord has placed my family on a somewhat public / political path - in taking some public stands on behalf of His name.
In that light - I'm so thankful that He is our Strength and our Shiled, and the Light that shines in the darkness. We desperately need Him and He shows us His faithfulness on a daily basis.

How fun!!! I grew up in Houston and moved to west Texas for college and then never left! Lubbock's population is 200,000 which coming from Houston seemed small to me! I married a "cowboy" and we live on 10 acres...so I am right with you on the joys and freshness of country life. Oh the stars! We are about to move to a smaller town...10,000 people so I will really get a taste of country life and no doubt be totally amused and enthralled by it all! Love your cross on the barn. Spray paint rocks! I am so glad you found my blog, friend!
ReplyDeleteYou sound like you have a really good life out there in the country. I know it's a fun place for your kids to grow up in. I have sooooo much to be thankful for - my wonderful husband, son, dogs, parents, in-laws. I love them all so much! As for the rug in my living room, it is a bound piece of carpet. We went to a store that sells discounted carpet and they have lots of remnants to choose from at good prices. I think the binding of it cost more than the actual carpet! I have bought bonding tape before and bound a rug so you could probably do it yourself. We just decided to go ahead and let them do it. I used to have a patterned rug in there, but decided to go with just a plain neutral carpet since I already have a lot of pattern going on. Talk to ya later!
ReplyDeleteFunny post-I grew up in the country and couldn't wait to move to a subdivision...my husband-a city boy-wanted the country...Compromise-a house in the sub, and a cottage in the woods...Works for me. (And that's what I am thankful for-compromise!)

ReplyDeleteI did half of my growing up in the country, so some of this is familiar to me! Now we live outside the city limits, yet not in the country, but you feel like you live in the country because...we live in an older neighborhood, with larger land lots and so many trees; our neighbors have hens; I have such good friends in this neighborhood. Pretty much all of our neighbors are friendly and kind! Thank you for reminding me how blessed I am for this; this is what I am thankful for today! :)
I love this post! It made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside! :) I am thankful today for having a day with my family and being with my friends tonight at "game night"! Very fun!!
ReplyDeleteI grew up in the country, but now am in the city. I love the country life and all that goes with it. I especially love knowing all the neighbors and how kind and considerate they all are. ReplyDeleteLoved your post....we just moved a year ago from 100 acres to less than an acre. I am enjoying not having to work so hard at keeping the place mowed...although there are a lot of things I miss about the country.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post. I love the country, when I was a young girl we lived in Florida but would go up to Alabama to my families farm and I have fond memories of those days. Chickens, fresh eggs, humingbirds in the okra flowers and lots of fresh vegies from the garden. What could be a better life. You are blessed! Sonia/Miss Bloomers

My daughter-in-law is a West Coast girl (California and Washington state) who met my son in seminary in Jackson, MS. They are currently in Annapolis, MD, but may be moving to Georgia. Guess we're making her into a Southern girl.

Girl, what a great post! I loved reading about your new experiences of the "country" life! I'm a country girl too...I live way out in the boondocks...and I love it here!!! I knew just what you meant when you said that you found the sound of hunting dogs running through your yard was a comforting sound! Hehe!!! I have lived in the city and I don't ever want to go back!!! I love this slower paced living!!!
And...I love your barn!!! Hehe!!! I think your cross looks gorgeous! Thanks for giving us a little look into your country life, my friend!!! Loved this post!!!
